I recently did a complete rebuild on my Massey with a continental Z 134. When the engine runs, I have no visible sign of oil getting to the head, Is this normal? I pulled the rocker arm assembly, removed the spark plugs and cranked the motor over a good two minutes until the oil pressure gauge showed 50 Pounds; still no oil comes from the small hole on top of the head.
I also checked the pin in the rocker arm to make sure it was not sheared, causing miss alignment of the oil port. Does cranking the engine create enough oil pressure to go to the top of the motor?
I don't think you can install the head gasket upside down, possibly covering the oil passage.
Would appreciate any input. Got a lot of time in this tractor and would like to do it right. Don Ungerland

Don, what jerry/MT said. I had the same problem only I had a new cam bearing installed and the oil passage hole in the bearing did not line up with the hole in the block.

The z 134 does not have a cam bearing; camshaft channel is machined, how ever that problem may occur lower in the rear main bearing. There are two channels, I have read that you can install them backwards and the oil gets trap in the end of the crank shaft. I’m not sure that I install the bearing correctly, but before I break down the lower end, I want to make sure Its not something else. When the engine runs, there’s a slight amount of oil on the cups of the pushrods. I don't see any great evidence of oil flow. Does any one know how much oil goes to the top of the head? Thanks for the response. D. Ungerland

I don"t know whether 2 minutes of cranking is enough on a dry engine but 50 psi is a lot of pressure and it is more than enough to cause oil flow to get to the rocker shaft. You have to fill all the oil galleries, crankshaft and main bearings, cam bearings and the oil filter will always be bleeding oil off. Since the oil is cold, the oil relief valve is probably open if the relief valve is correctly set(though in that case, the 50 psi on the gauge puzzles me). I think I"d try cranking it again a little longer (4-5 minutes with the spark plugs removed shouldn"t hurt the starter)and see.

I believe the oil gets to the rear rocker mount from the rear camshaft bearing via a drilled passage just like the other Z series Continentals. The passage may be clogged. Run a wire down the passage and see if it reaches to where the cam shaft bearing is located. I think there is a Welch plug in the rear of the block at the camshaft and if the wire reaches to the top of the Welch plug, it"s probably not clogged.

Hi Jerry,
Did try cranking it longer, still no oil showing up. Will try the wire treatment to unclog, I also heard its possible to install rear main bearing backwards, witch blocks the oil from getting to the head. Hope this is not the case!
Thanks for the reply D. Ungerland
