Hydraulic cylinder repair

The hydraulic cylinder on my woodsplitter is leaking around the ram. I am attempting to tear down this cylinder but cannot get it apart. looking at the end of the cylinder that the ram comes out of, there is a recessed snap ring down in there. I took the snap ring out and am turning the seal housing counter-clockwise thinking that the end will un-screw. I have been using a dull chisel to turn the housing, however it does not seem to be loosening. I am judging by the distance it is from the snap ring groove. I have the housing pretty chewed up from using the chisel. the housing is too far recessed to get a pipe wrench or the like on it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this apart?

sounds like the cylinders on my JD backhoe Did you get all of the snapring out? If you did , just pull on the yoke at the end of the rod and pull the shaft and seal out as one unit .

Sounds like the seal housing is stuck in the cylinder bore.

Air pressure applied carefully will blow the housing out.

Be careful as this can be dangerous.

are you saying that the housing isn't threaded and that the snap ring is the only thing holding the end of the cylinder on?

If you are turning the packing inside the cylinder and the unit is not unthreading then the snap ring must be the only thing holding it together. (that and crud build-up at the end)
