I've had my Ford 4600 tractor for over 10 years. It still starts fine, but within the last 2 years after just a few minutes in the field, it just quits. Last year I had the fuel tank taken off and cleaned to the tune of $1800.00. That did not help at all. When the tractor quits there is no fuel coming from the tank. I've taken the line off at the external fuel filter, there is no fuel until you blow back into the tank from that line. I've also taken the bottom inlet of the tank off and let the fuel drain out. No evidence of anything washing out of the tank, but I can't help but belive there is something in the tank. What is the best way to thoroughly clean the tank without removing it?

Pair of Dice: Thanks for the advice. When I followed your instructions, there was "sludge" (can't think of a better description) in the tank. After washing, drying, putting in fresh fuel, etc., I ran it several hours with no problems at all. Thanks again for your speedy reply.

I wish I was closer, I'd clean it for a lot less than $1800. First is it a metal tank or plastic? If it a steel tank there may be rust scale plugging up the outlet, plastic could just be some trash. I have cleaned several just by draining or siphoning all of the fuel out and taking the line off of the bottom of the tank and the fuel shutoff or sediment bowl, I then flush it with water until it runs clear. I then blow it out with an air gun to dry it out. When you replace the shutoff make sure that it is clean also, there should be a short stem that goes up into the tank an inch or so. Sometimes this is broken off and allows trash or scale to settle over the discharge. After you reassemble and add fuel put in a bottle of fuel conditioner just in case there was a little water left. I've always cured my problem this way. Hope this helps and good luck.
