Hello all,

I just bought a 580B CK Diesel 4sp w/ shuttle. Looking for all kinds of info. The machine runs great, has as much pin slop as you would expect for an older machine. Breaks are there buy you have to stand on them and even then they're marginal.
Can't seem to get it into 1st or 2nd gear. The clutch seems to be soft. I want to go through and change filters, check fluids etc. any ideas, thoughts or guidance would be very appreciated.

Thanks Keng

I have one of these. Mine has the 4 speed gearbox, and the forward/reverse lever on the column, with a go-nogo "clutch" on the left. I think they call this the shuttle transmission, but you cannot change gears on the fly, so I don't know.

The biggest hassle with mine is road gear. 3rd and 4th are essentially useless unless I'm on level ground. On the slightest uphill, it just slows to a crawl. So, if I need to drive to my neighbors, it is a slow chore.

There is a guy who has most parts for these at good prices- I found him on this site. I'll email you if I locate his info.

Mine is a good machine and has served me well. I think it is not as strong as the later models that are dedicated backhoes. I have to get the angle just right with the digger arm in order to reposition the rear of the machine.

The later models (starting with 580C I think) were lighter weight and were bachoes from the ground up. The 580B was built on a farm tractor.

Right now mine has a very leaky bucket cylinder and apparently there are about 3 different packing kits that it might use- can't tell until it is apart. So I'll prolly just take the cylinder somewhere.

Congrats on your purchase. Does yours have the extendahoe or the 4 in 1 bucket?

I have one of these also. It is loose as a goose but a strong machine. The engine is great, but I had trouble with the shuttle and it was costly to repair. Check the hydro oil by removing a small pipe plug on the right hand loader mast, add until it runs out. Brakes are non exitent. I rebuilt mine and still had very little brakes. Drop the front bucket in tight spots to get stopped. The biggest problem with my machine is my employees using the front loader. It has a dry clutch and if you do not know how to load with it the clutch won't last long. Use low-range first gear and keep that foot off the clutch petal. This is why I also have a 580 super E with tourqe converter drive

Hi Lloyd,

I do keep my foot off the clutch, thanks. I see what looks like a drain or "level" plug on the left side of the loder mast, are the two sides connected? I know all this will be clear when the books get here. I ran the maching for 5hrs on Sunday, BEAST - strong, 2 gal"s per hour. A bit sloppy on the pins but nothing to complain about. I"m VERY happy with the purchase. I"ve been looking at the brakes on equipmentpartssource dot com and see that they look easy to get to. I"m going to take a shot when the books get here. Do you have a recomendation for a parts source?

Sorry keng, I don't check here often. Yes the two sides are connected. That plug should be about half way the loader mast on the right hand mast sitting in the seat. Just fill until it runs out. My machine is very loose but is a strong digger.

Is it a mechanical shuttle or a hydraulic shuttle? One has a clutch the other a torque converter. 580 B's were never blessed with too much brakes. Small dry discs with shaft seals that were prone to leak oil on the discs. The 188 diesel engine, in my opinion, was one of the best ever built. These were good old machines in their day, but they did have their faults.

Hi Welding man,

It has a clutch, 4 spd and shuttle on the left of the steering wheel. I"m trying to figure out where to check / fill the hydraulic fluid. I checked P-steering fluid, eng oil and other things I could find. Looks like maybe the left loader frame is a tank for Hyd fluid??

Thanks for your help.

Keng
