Gauge repair question

About half of my gauges don't work. Unlike the previous owner I refuse to keep them this way. They seem to all work with a hot attatched to the gauge and the neutral varies by the sender. My local (would like to call him advisor) told me to touch the sender wire to ground and see if the needle moves. It did and pegged off the gauge and stayed there. How does a person establish whether the gauge is bad or the sender? And also is my gauge ruined?? Thank you.

If you peg the needle by grounding the wire going TO the sender, the gauge is ok, but the sender is bad.

usually a slight whack on the SIDE of the gauge with the handle of a screwdriver or eq. will do the trick.

What your saying is it's not ruined? I thought I probably overextended the needles travel. What would reversing the polarity do??

Dyna, Your working with mild inductance here, reverse polarity probably won't have any effect if it is stuck. Hammer has the answer (but gently, OK) Joe
