Does anyone have any idea how to fix a jumpy inaccurate tach needle? If I disconnect the cable at the distributor end and spin the cable by hand the tach seems to run smoothly. I have inspected the plastic cable gear and it seems OK; that is no broken teeth but the gear is tapered. The tach has 1519 hours on it and is also a "speedometer". There seems to be a lot of grease where the plastic gear is inserted into the distributor housing.

The holder for that gear is eccentric, which allows you to adjust the backlash on the tach drive gear. Notice how that collar has a series of notches where the screws go into the distributor? You need to rotate that until it won't go further, then back off a couple notches and install the screws. The other possibility is that the other end (at the tach) is rounded off so it isn't engaging the tachometer drive very well and is slipping. In that case, you probably need to replace the cable. If so, see if you can talk somebody with small hands into helping you out, as there isn't much room.

Big Fred,

Thank you for the insight. I'll give it a try.
