I'm restoring my '40 JD Model A and I was wondering if it is a good idea to remove the front frame to get in better for cleaning and painting. Would all I need to do is pull the bolts, block the tractor under the engine, and nothing else would be hurt? Thanks.

It is a lot of work to get in that far. I have had trouble with the bolts breaking off on the one I tried that with. Makes a big issue then. What I have done since is to get all the exterior prepped for painting then use some rust removal compounds or rust converters and let them get in between there as well as they can. The end result you want is to keep it from rusting and messing up your paint. If you do decide to take the frame off, be careful to block it all up well and use some heat on the nuts or bolts so maybe they won't break off. I'd have some help on hand for it. I also would take the block out before I take the frame off. I assume you are meaning the frame part where it connects to the main case?

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I do mean the frame part connecting to the main case. I can see that it could be alot of work, and if I need to take the block off, then I'll just leave it alone. The engine has been working great so I don't want to tear into that. I just wanted to get some advice since its my first restoration (I'm 22). This is a great hobby and I want to learn as much as I can. I figure all the knowledge I can gather will help me later. Thanks again!

I did that on my H. I had the pedestal and radiator off so it was easy to get the frame off and clean it up. I'm not sure on the A. It's a lot bigger so you might need help handling it. Good luck with your project.
