I've just purchased a John Deere Model A. It was running great when I bought it, but now it's not. The timing is perfect - new points. The carberator was recently rebuilt by the John Deere dealer. It starts easily, but runs weakly and dies if you apply any load. When it tries to die, you can get it back if you pull out the choke for a second. Any ideas??

If you have a '54 Model A John Deere, it's a keeper, cuz they quit making them a couple years before that, but it still sounds like a lack of fuel problem. If you can choke an engine and it starts running right, it is not getting enough fuel. Maybe need to set the load adjustment up a bit. Check the manual for which of the two needles it is that needs to be adjusted.

Sounds to me like something with the carb. Did you or the dealer set the carb correctly after it was rebuilt? Is your fuel line to the carb open? I bought a model A and the fuel tank had enough rust in it that it would clog the sediment bowl and fuel line and eventually kill the engine. I would have to do the same thing as you, apply a little choke, and it would run better. But mine eventually died.....
