Have a Farmall 400 that needs to be split for clutch work. What's the most efficient and safe way to do this, thanx

The best way to split that or any other tractor is to use splitting stands. If you don't have them, or they are not available to borrow than I would suggest that you make some. Get some flat iron and angle iron, take the measurements, and put them together by either welding or bolting together. You may want to use the font stand as stationary. Take a measurement of the distance between the frame, drill holes in the iron. Mount these to legs with a brace between them for support and strength. If you can, get you a couple of all thread rods and mount "feet" on the bottom of them for stability. this should allow you to adjust the height needed and support the front of the tractor. For the aft stand, make a cradle to bolt to the transmission, and put at least a single wheel on it if not two. You want these wheels to be steerable preferably to east movement and mating of the front and back of the tractor. If you have a heavy duty floor jack, you may want to use it instead and block up the rear of the tractor on a jack stand or blocks after it is split. I know that this will not be the fanciest looking way to accomplish this task, but if built with care, these stands can be universal and used more than once. They are also quite as safe as they are made, and the risk is minimal. I know that this will work because I have used (and made) them in shops that I used to work in many years ago. Also if you know of anyone with a John Deere splitting stand, the front stand should work on the tractor. I don't think the aft one will though. Good Luck with changing out your clutch.
