What is the best way to maintain a battery in off-use season? Will a trickle charge be OK? Read somewhere battery should NOT be put on a concrete floor. Why?
If battery is left in the tractor, will disconnecting either cable insure against a draw down if there is a current leak somewhere?

I like the idea of a solar trickle charger, but have not bought one or used one. clean top of battery before storage as acid and dirt can conduct electricity between battery posts.

I take my batteries out for the winter. I put them in my basement on a 2x8. The wood keeps them off the cement floor. It is because of the moisture content in the cement that causes batteries to drain. I re-charge them in the spring.

I don't take the batteries out of the tractor and I don't trickle charge. The shed they are in is unheated and yes, it does freeze in Pennsylvania. As long as the electrical system is working properly and not draining the battery, I don't see a reason to remove it.
All I do is give the battery a good soaking charge for 6 - 8 hours every month or so. Usually while I'm outside working on something else.
One 6 volt battery I have was bought in the fall of 1994 and still works OK.

The concrete floor thing does not apply to modern batteries--has to do with the materials used, don't remember the details. If you disconect the battery ground cable, you shouldn't lose charge. I like the idea of a trickle charger.

I take out all of my batterys and put them on shelf in garage hooked up to a 2 amp trickle charger.Bought about half dozen of these from Harbor Freight for $7.00 each and they work great.

How long can a trikle charger be used? Can it stay on the battery all season?
