Power Steering

I have a Farmall 400 with an aftermarket power steering system. When the tractor has been used for a bit of time, I start loosing lots of fluid through a hole in the top of the reservior. I am guessing, but I believe that it is likely that it is boiling out, rather than shacking out.

About the reservior: It is stainless, about 5 inches in diameter, and about 3 inches deep, and holds just shy of a quart, it mounts above the pump. It has a small hole in the top. It looks like a factory hole, but who knows.

My questions are: should the hole be there, or did someone drill it themselves.

Automotive systems are always closed. What would happen if I plugged it?

Is is normal for the fluid to operate a a boiling temperature?

Thanks very much to anyone who answers.

Gary, if your P/S system is running hot enough to boil the oil you have a much bigger problem than an oil leak. ~The usual cause of spitting fluid out of a hydraulic system is air in the system oil. Do not close the vent on your system, cars & trucks do have vented systems. If you don't vent the system something will have to give when the oil heats up & expands & that is usually a seal.
~Look for an air leak into the system on the suction side of the system [usually the pump seal, or an "O" ring on the suction side] if nothing found there make sure the reservoir is properly baffled [if the fluid isn't properly baffled in the reservoir it will turbulate & foam & introduce air into the pump suction side].
~If the system is running real hot suspect a restriction somewhere that causes the free flow pressure to elevate. I doubt your system would last very long if it is boiling the oil. Any water in the oil could boil & turn to steam & could cause oil expulsion, but even that is plenty hot for a power steering system..... ..
