Uh oh, didn't consider that. Never messed with pos
ground. Sorry, but reverse the leads on the meter and test it anyway. I an not positive on how a coil is built internally but it is still a coil. It is possible that it would work either way. You still have 12 volts going thru the windings so i suppose it doesnt matter which way it goes thru. The EMF should still collapse and charge the iron core. Capicitors do care which way the juice flows when it comes to dc voltage. Wish i could be of more help.

Some one will have the answer posted sooner or later. Hang on.

Turn the motor over until the points are closed.
Turn on the ignition, attach spark plug to coil wire.

With plastic handle screwdriver make and break points.

If no spark, hold points open with plastic and check for voltage where wire goes thru dist.

If no voltage disconnect - from coil where it attached to dist and check for voltage on the end of wire and at coil. Black of volt meter to good frame ground and Red of volt meter to the afore mentioned test points. You may have a bad gromet goint into the dist that insulates it from ground.

How much "power" to the coil. You need to get a voltmeter and measure the voltage at the coil. Also is it an original 6V system with generator, 12V system with alternator, or some other configuration. The points can look ok and still have oil from your finger or a thin film of anything and they will not conduct. When it is turning over, try to observe if there is a "spark" at the points. If something is wrong up toward the battery such as high resistance in the ignition swith or bad connection it could cause you to have a "weak" spark. We really need to know whether it is a 6V or 12V system and what the voltage measurement is at the top of the coil both with the points open and the points closed.
