I have just finished patching my 9X38 farmall H rim that was eaten out around the valve stem hole. I now want to drill another hole at a better spot on the rim. The problem is that I am not sure of the hole size since it was destroyed by calcium corrosion. Can anyone tell me the proper hole size? Thanks a bunch....DWeeb

I think 5/8 is a good size, if for some reason it is too big get a valve stem protector, I would use one anyway it keeps the stem from chaffing on the rim hole.

I just pulled the wheel off my 1935 A Deere It had the rim ate out around the Stem hole I have never repaired one before. The rim is 36". I have a scrap 38" rim do you think the curvature is close enough?? What do you do about the rust??? Can I grind it off and paint it with rustoleum or something better??? Your help would be appreciated.Earl in Illinois

Seamo, I just finished with my rim, mounted the tire today with a new tube. I used a piece of 1/8 inch flat steel that I fashioned a patch from. I own a weld shop so I just welded it in with a torch on the underside and brazed it on the outside...smoothed it out and it looks pretty good. As far as the rust I just took a chipping hammer and knocked off the big scale then used a 4 1/2 inch grinder alternating between the abrasive wheel and coarse wire wheel. Make sure and use a really good respirator....whew....lots of rusty, salty dust. After that I washed it with hot soap and water. I painted the rim with rustoleum rusty metal primer and after the primer I painted it with the rustoleum metal paint....aluminum color. I ended up drilling a 5/8 inch hole. It looks great and now I am ready to do it all over again with the other.

Good idea to drill your new hole in another location on the rim.....

Thanks D.Webb . I got started on my rim today. I used the 38" rim because the calcium had ate the curved part of the rim too. My patch is going to be 5"x8" over to the edge of the flange. You welded it with Steel on OD. and brazed on the inside??? Will that be easier to do than wire weld???It looks like the curve is not going to be noticeable like Don said. Thanks for the reply. Earl

Seamo, I have a mig welder and would have probably used it but I like using an acetylene torch....that is just me. If you have a mig welder, go ahead and use it. I was surprised that the rim was as good as it was after I got all of the scale off. I had to braze a couple of pin holes nearby but was able to get them easily. I also forgot to tell you that I sandblasted the area befor welding. That made it easier to weld with very little slag.

I would think a patch from the 38" rim would work....I don't think you could see much difference in say a 8" section.....lay a thin board across the 38" rim...then lay the 36" rim on top align the two rims straight across from the board and see how much differance there will be..... .

Thanks Don, It looks like that patch is going to fit real good.I got the old cut out and the new patch to fit the hole. Just weld and grind now. Earl

I believe that 5/8" is a pretty standard diameter for valve stem holes in tractor rear rims...but why not just measure the stem diameter on your tube and just make it a "snug" fit?

Thanks Rod, I was hoping to get it drilled and painted before the tube arrives....ordered it today... I think I will take your advice and measure the tube when it gets here.

Boy, I know what you mean. Right now I am in the process of painting one of my rims while a new tube and tire is on order. As with you, I want to get it back on the tractor just as soon as possible. My stem hole is 5/8" dia...my tire size is 11.2x24. Your old tubes apparently have the stem intended for liquid ballasting. Probably your new one does too. Check out the link...that type of stem (TR218A)seems to use a standard 5/8" hole. You could risk it. I think you would be pretty safe in doing so.

You're right Rod, the old tube had calcium in it. The rim was a mess but now it looks pretty darn good. I think it will be fine.
Good luck with your project,
D
