I got a hydraulic ram on my loader that is broke at one end. I bought it like this and want to weld it back together. It is stainless and is about 2" in diameter. It is broke off just below (about a inch or so) to where it mounts on to my loader arm. Can anybody tell me what welding rod to use on this. I have a small miller welder that I can weld it with. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance..... :-)

The way I repair broken cylinder rods, is to drill and tap in a lathe, both ends and and screw togather with the thread portion of a hardened bolt. Taper both broken ends while in the lathe.
Weld with 7018 rod while still in the lathe. I have repaired a lot of hydraulic cylinders and most are steel, coated with hard chorme.

Repairing the cylinder may be a cost effective idea but if your talking front end loader ram, I think you had better take the safety factor into consideration. Many rods can be replaced without buying a new cylinder. If youv'e got a parts person with good sourcing ideas he will be your best friend.
