when reinstalling a cylinder head I plan on using a new gasket. Should I use any sealant along with the gasket????
thanks,
Steve

If the gasket is a metal type, that is sheet metal on the outside of both surfaces, then you will need a sealer. If the gasket is a Fel Pro blue teflon coated gasket then it needs nothing. Using a sealer on Fle Pro teflon gaskets keeps them from sealing properly.

Permatex Copper Coat is a spray on gasket sealer that is designed for head gaskets and I use it for that purpose and only that purpose.

The brush on Copper Coat is useful around water hoses, ect.

There is something called hitac (I'm not sure of the spelling)made by Permatex, it is red. spray it on both sides of the gasket. The aluminum paint probably works, but it seems like it might be better to spray the gasket. You can use hitac to hold gaskets in place while you are assembling the parts. The hitac comes in both a spray and brush on so you can use whichever you prefer.

I don't know what these guys are going to tell you, but I used to spray the block and head with aluminum paint....put togeather before paint dries....what gets inside will burn off....

When Ford was using Hi-Comp 312 "Interceptor" engines in their trooper cars back in '56/'57, they recommended using aluminum paint; one coat to dry, then a second coat installed wet. Seemed like a good idea, so I've been doing the same thing ever since although it's probably overkill on most of these old low comp. tractor engines.
