Cub 63

I have a 63 Farmall Cub. I just finished removing the pistons from the motor and the cylinders are in pretty good shape. The pistons were tighter than I expected and I am now wondering if the motor needs to be rebored or if I can just install new rings. The ridge around the top of each cylinder is very slight (about .003" to .005"). Can anyone suggest a good way to measure piston to cylinder clearance and what the maximum tolerance is.

Based on the reasoning that I would have to go to a machine shop to get an engine bored anyway, I always send disassembled block and head to shop to clean and check. They can examine for tolerance (rule of thumb I want is if I can hone it .005 or less and clean it no bore, >.005 I want it bored). Local shop charges me $200 to check everything, clean, hot tank, and pressure test (4 cyl diesel). That includes rods and crank for out of round. I've had to do more rod and crank work on tractors than rebores. Generally it runs me about $850.00 for everything including a rebore, crank turn, all the checking, assembly of short block, & head reconditioning, plus parts.

I just rebuilt a cub early this summer it had a pretty good ring ridge(it would catch you finger nail) I cut the ridge out and put rings and bearing in it and its has mowing grass all summer long and it doesn't use any oil so far.

Shaggy, Thanks for your response. Did you get a big improvement in power? How did the compression look?
