My dad is restoring an old tractor he purchased and the carburator is useable but had some old gas in it. We washed and submerged it in gas but it's still gummy. Any recipes to soak or boil it in that'll save it??. Thanks!

Try getting some carb soaking fluid at the local auto parts store. Commonly comes in a gallon can (looks like a gallon paint can). Should also come with a basket to soak the parts. Will do a great job...don't get ANY on your skin though. A gallon will do several carbs. Will cost in the $13-15 range.

Acetone works well and is readily available, put it in a container with a lid as it will evaporate very quickly.
On tough ones look for MEK. Be careful with using MEK with the newer rubber tipped float valves as they will be eaten up by the MEK, Denatured alcohol will work as a solvent also.

If you don't have any carb cleaner, try soaking it in vinegar-you'll be suprised at how well that works, but don't get in a hurry. Let it soak for a week or two. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Throttle Body Cleaner cleans better than carburetor cleaner. It will remove paint, so be cautious.

Try one of the spray on carburetor cleaners, they work pretty good.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll try the vinegar. This thing is GUMMY!!! STICKY!!! The problem is I need to soak it and a spray can of cleaner won't give me a half a gallon or so, and will evaporate quickly. Any other ideas??

Thanks!

I've got an idea. Get yourself some Toluol, aka Toluene, or Xylol, aka Xylene. These solvents can be found in paint stores, and are very strong, somewhat expensive, but you can keep it to clean other things. Also, don't get either one on your skin, it will dissolve the fat in your skin and turn it white, also will penetrate through to your blood. Trust me, I work in an oil refinery that makes this stuff, so I know about it. But it will really dissolve the gum and goo.
