Piston ring re-use after honing

Anyone every heard of using the old piston rings if they look fine and gap is fine,in a newly bored and honed cylinder. I would not think they would ever seat in the bore, any comments on this one?

If you have torn the engine down and bored or honed the cylinders, use new rings. If the old rings were good, then why did you tear it all down. Sounds like you are trying to save a nickel and spend dollars.

If the cylinders were bored larger they will not be big enough,if all you did was re hone,they may reseat.

I've not tried it. The rings are fit to the cylinder during the break in perion by the cross hatches of the hone job. Enough roughness in the honing wears off the ring surface and the rings wear off the edge of the honing until the rings fit the cylinders. I don't think the rings will go through the process again. Also, if the engine was overheated the rings will become soft, and will bend easily, even bending into an S without snapping. Rings are cast iron, and should snap if twisted. They are cast like a cylinder and in a slight oval with a certain area designed for removal for the gap, and they are sliced off like bread and machined on many grinders to come up with the finished product. When I got my certificate in automotive repair in 1971 we went to Hastings Manufacturing and saw how they made rings. If you are having trouble finding your rings they can supply you with rings based on your specifications, they will just pull the correct ring off the shelf for each ring groove. Two I can remember are the John Deere E stationary engine, and a Quincy 325 compressor. It seems like replacing the rings is the way to go.

I'm not a tractor guy, but have a love for my 51
farmall s/m. As a certified ford auto tech this guy is dead on. If you try to re-use rings that have gone through the break in once, you'll have an engine to tear back down a third time because
they will never re-seat. Hope this saves you some time and money!
