NEVER, NEVER, EVER use a knife, screwdriver or other metal tool!!! I see many tags ruined by that method at auctions of tractors and other stuff.
One was wrecked right in front of me when the guy took out a pocket knike and scraped away at plain old dirt. It was his tractor, but up for sale. It put all kinds of nice scratches in the soft metal tag.
Later tags may be just printed, so chemicals or paint remover will take off everything. Even 409 can be too strong. I messed up a late IHC Cub with WD-40, trying to remove caked on grease from the tag next to the steering box.
Maybe a toothbrush and plain old water is the answer, or maybe kerosene or clean engine oil for greasy dirt. I wonder if a heat gun will soften paint enough to use a stiff bristle brush? Has anyone else got any ideas or experience? Slowpoke

Read an article once where a car restorer reccomended polishing the paint off with leather on stuff like that, never tried it though.

Have had excellent luck cleaning up those tags with lacquer thinners. But, always try it on a corner of the tag first, to see what happens. Have never had an instance where the tag paint was also removed.
