This is my second post. I tried the Farmall board and got no feedback. Hopefully I'll get lucky here.

I just finished a complete tune-up on my M and it is still not running as well as it should. The compression is good and even so I know that it can.

I checked the timing and the mag snaps on the first timing notch as it should.

When I check the timing with a light with engine running, the timing is advanced about 30 deg. The timing does not change from this position regardless of engine speed. It is my understanding that this system should advance and retard the timing with engine RPM.

Is my timing advance working as it should or do I have a problem?

It sounds as if you have the timing correct. The mag should snap at the timing notch. The I&T manual shows full advance at 40 degrees. Most of the posts I have read have stated 30 degrees full advance is best. It sound as you are there. The advance comes in very quick. Unless you have an idle speed of 450 rpm, you may be at full advance when you check at your idle and don't see a difference at wide open. The advance weights are below the breaker plate. To check them push the weights outward, both weights should move together, then retract back to starting position.

Have you adjusted the valves? This is something often overlooked. Also check for a vacuum leak around the carb and intake to head mating surfaces. Just from what you have said, I don't think you have a timing problem. Good luck. Doc.
