I'm looking for a way to change out the belts on my 51 m model without taking the whole tractor apart. How does everyone else do it ?

Fan mechanism has a set screw, then turn the threaded collar -- If it is rusted, be careful or you get to buy a new fan--you may want to use penetrating oil and let it set for a while. Turning collar in tightens belt, turning it out loosens the belt, allowing you to remove it.

Deryl - I find the easiest way to remove the old belts is to simply cut 'em off.

Once that's done, loosen the locknut and set screw on the adjustable (front) half of the fan pulley, also the locknut/setscrew on the generator pulley. Open up (unscrew) both pulleys as far as they will go - usually 5 or 6 turns. Will probably require some PB Blaster and hammer and punch before they pulleys will unscrew - the threads are often stuck.

Once you get the pulleys opened up, first install the generator belt. Loop it over all 4 fan blades one blade at a time - it doesn't look like it but it WILL fit over the fan! - and set it in the generator and the proper water pump groove. Then repeat the process with the fan belt.

Once you get the belts in place, close up (tighten) both the water pump and generator pulleys. Neither belt needs to be too tight - about 1/2" of slack on the generator and 1" on the fan is OK. Finally replace the set screws and locknuts on both adjustable pulleys.

Thanks for the info, guys. I cut off the old belts and tapped the pulley until it began turning. This was my first real job since buying the M in the spring. Thanks again, Deryl
