I am trying to help my very frustrated husband. We have a 1941 9n and for some reason it will not start. The lights will not even go which leads us to believe its in the electrical system. Could it be the part called the cut -out assembly? Is there anything else we can check? The battery is holding a charge! Thank you for your help in advance!!!!!

If you have test light the problem should be easy to isolate.A test light can be bought at any auto parts store quite cheaply.
The test light will have a sharp point (prod)on the light and a wire leading from it with an alligator clip on the end of it.
First hold the clip onto one battery post and the prod on the other,If you have light , battery is ok Now clip to clean tractor frame , if light is on, ground side is ok. now move prod to negative battery clamp and on down the cable and wiring until the light no longer lights -now you have discovered the trouble spot.

Hi....The cut out keeps the battery from discharging when the engine is off. The first place to look is the battery cables.
Be sure they are clean and tight, not only at the battery but at the other end of the cables also. You can mix a couple of tablespoons of baking soda with a pint of water and use an old toothbrush to remove any white/green deposits at the terminals. Don't let it get inside the battery (or on clothes). Clean battery off with clear water & dry. Use a wire brush/sandpaper at the other end of the cables to remove rust and dirt from terminals & bolts or studs. You should have lights now.
If the engine won't turn over, let us know.
John

Have you gotten that 9N started yet? The test light is a good idea, but I doubt if you can buy one with a 6 volt bulb anymore. If you have one that is for 12v, remember that the light will only get to half brightness on 6v. You might try replacing the 12v bulb with a 6v bulb, if they both have the same base. I don't remember now if they do.
