I have just acquired a 1946 Farmall A that I want to restore and I am confused about the difference between OEM (what does that mean?), New Old Stock, and reproduction parts. What should I be buying for a restoration?

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer.... the company that first made the product. NOS are original
parts that are available long after the product ceased to be made. Reproduction parts are copies of the originals by a different manufacturer, usually under license from the owner of the original name, which may not be the OEM.
I just got a transmission filter from Case for a 1959 tractor. It's not NOS, not a repro because it's improved, and probably not OEM, since Case may have had it made to their specs by someone else.
OEM and NOS is usually best, but you may have to settle for repro or even good used.

Hi Brad, I am far from an expert but here is my 2¢.
1. OEM = original equipment manfacturer parts.

2. NOS = same as above, is new but old stock that was manufactured years ago, may have been discontinued by OEM or OEM no longer exists. Avoid shelf life items like gaskets (especially cork), parts containing rubber (seals), and parts that may be internally rusted.

3. Reproduction parts are after market. Some are cheap knock-offs, others are as good or better than OEM but still are not ***original***. Joe
