Diesel that will not turn over without charging...

This is probably a stupid question but here goes...
I have a diesel tractor (my first diesel) which has a dead battery each morning - even after running several hours the afternoon before. To start, I need to charge the battery and then jump with my pickup. The battery is only two years old and started fine in the warm months. Is this electrical (the starter turns after running the glow plugs for 20 - 30 seconds but does not have enough power to start the tractor) or is it engine related. The tractor is about 25 years old but the fuel system was rebuilt when I purchased it 3 years ago.
Before spending money to eliminate battery, alternator, etc. I need to be sure. This is driving me nuts. Thanks

Paul, After you get it started in the morning and good and warmed up, do you ever shut it off and start it back up while it's warm? Starter working ok? Yeah , you can limp one along for awhile that way, on weak batteries ,if it's got a block heater that circulates the coolant ,that sure helps, an hour of pre-heat does wonders,I like to get as much out of the battery life that I possibly can,and buy batteries when I have too...but if it's a Backhoe tractor that I consider an emergency machine, well , better spurge and keep it "tip top"

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping it wasn't something wrong with engine or electrical beyond the battery. Looks like it's time to cough up another $105 for a battery.

Doug:I have turned it off after running for 5 minutes and it starts right up. Same after several hours. It's the next morning when the problems start. The tractor is under a roof but sides are open and I'm sure that the 10 - 20F temp overnite isn't helping.

Paul,Really diesels are stiff in the winter, they don't fire up like a gasser, all this could be normal, the diesel engine uses the heat of compression to ignite the fuel and a chilly engine block doesn't make for ignition to happen easy, so if it has a block heater, plug it in, and if it doesn't have one ,shop around and buy one ($30?)then install it,we put one on a 1965 JD 4020,had to figure out how to plumb the two fittings , but life is good now!

If it starts well after the charge and jump then
I would say it's the battery that's bad. If the
battery is the same size as the one in your truck
or some other vehicle make a switch and see what
happens. The battery could be a light duty type
and diesel starters take a lot out of them even
if it's only 24 months old. Cold and hot weather
are killers for batteries.

The diesel does not require electricity after it has started, so if the battery does not maintain a charge, either the alternator is not charging the battery or there might be a broken or loose wire in the charging circuit. Also check for clean battery terminals, and a good ground connection. If your battery cables have replacement, clamp on connectors, try a new cable. Clamp ons are a temporary fix, but often loosen up and fail to conduct enough electricity to start a diesel.
