I have some urethane hardner I plan on mixing with my paint. I am going to paint the hood of my tractor. If i mix a little too much and don't use it all right away, can I put it back in the paint can and seal it? Will it set up all the paint in the can even if its sealed? Any advice appreciated.

I store mine in clean used jars with a good sealing lid. I then use that paint with a small throw away brush to touch up things like bolt heads.

Hi Big Jim,

Don't mix more than you can use at one time. Hardeners cause paint to cure by internal chemical reaction. Air is not needed. The "pot life" of paint after the hardener is added is usually measured in hours (depending on manufacturer). After that, the mixture is not usable, even if stored in a sealed container...it will likely be like jello the next day. You should NOT put mixed material back in the same can with unmixed material. You would not only screw up the mix ratio of the resulting combination, you would make the unmixed paint unusable also. Plan on throwing away any unused mixed material.

I agree with Rod....If you pour the unused mix back in the can, better plan on buying more paint...You painting indoors? Way to cold to paint here.....

I've used a old quart paint can cleaned out to try & save the left overs several times It works alot of the time if it's not to long till you paint again & if it don't work your only out what you were going to through any how also be carefull allot of hardners are only good for days after the seal is broken keeping it in the frig, prolongs the life a few days
