I was wondering if painting old rubber tires with drain oil would soften them?

If tires are hard from age and sunlight, it's because oxygen in the air and ultraviolet in sunlight has worked on the rubber and partially destroyed it chemically. You can't reverse it.

Petroleum products attack rubber, and make it swell. If you are interested in prolonging the tires life, I'd suggest using brake fluid.

If you're trying to soften them in hopes of removing weather cracks, I don't think anything will work. But you can try some of the auto tire restoration products from the local auto supply, Eastman's or JC Whitney. Or ask a used car dealer what he uses. I sometimes use NO-Touch in a spray can. Spray it on and it shines itself and looks pretty good.

Just wondering why you wanted them softened? I don't know as oil will, but if they are scrap tires they can be softened with alcohol, I don't remember the exact kind, but it softens rubber to shread easier and to remove it from the steel belting, and leaves the rubber caemically ok for making into new rubber. But I might be getting off your idea with the recycling of rubber. I don't know of a way to soften it to make it useable.
