I am now trying to resurect a '51 Furguson that I belive to be a TEA20-85. The serial # is:TEA191246. I am in need of help on the starter system and/or wiring, because when I got to it there is no starter button or wire that I can see. Is it a mechanical switch inside the case? What is the starting "ritual" may be a better question. Thank You in advance for your help Andy 01/21/03

To start you push the gearstick forward into the position marked "S" just to the right of 3rd gear. This mechanically moves the contacts in the switch on top of the transmission casing. Faults can be: switch contacts burnt out of gummed up; mechanical wear in switch plunger that stop the operating rod from moving it far enough for the switch contacts to meet. Newer T20s have a button on the right hand side of teh transmission casing, just forward of the seat that you have to push in befor the gear lever will go into start position - its basically a safety interlock to reduce risk of starter being engaged accidentally. My 1951 doesn't have one and I think it is only fitted on later tractors.
