I've had JD diesels go out at 2400, and three more JDs that average over 8000 and aren't even close to an overhaul. Ten/twenty year history and still the first engines, oil consumption the same since day one. If you get 10,000 from a diesel, there is nothing to complain about.

diesel 10,000
gas 4,000
Too many variables; load, maint, time idle, time loaded, time lugged, cold starts.

Question is hard to answer. Depends on how hard it has been worked, frequency of oil changes, air filter, maintenance, etc. Don't think many people rebuild (unless they are doing a full restoration) for the heck of it. Most people will wait until there are symptoms, such as smoke, oil consumption, lack of power, etc. A figure to throw out that may or may not be typical is 5000 hours (wonder what type of response I'll get for that?). I've seen a couple shelled out in 3000.
