PTO causing engine stalling

I just got a 48 Farmall Cub that has a Woods belly mower deck attached. When I try engage the PTO it stalls the engine regardless of where the throttle is set. I am new to the tractor world but I did get the operators manual and shop manual neither of which have shed light on this problem nor have I found anything on the internet so far to help. I figured my next step is to disconnect the belt from the PTO to see if the problem still happens. I am taking the deck off anyway at some point until spring. I would take any advice anyone can give to this 'newcomer'. Note that otherwise it has run great in all gears. Thanks much.

You are on the right track with taking the belt off and trying it. Sounds like something is stuck.Hopefully the blades are just jammed in the mower or something is wrapped up in the blade shaft. Be careful and never get under the mower or near the PTO shafts when the tractor is running!

Thanks Chris. I did take the whole deck off and the PTO ran smooth at all speeds. I could barely notice it engaging via the noise/speed of the engine. I turned the deck over and all of the blades turned easily by hand/one finger. So my next guess was the belt was perhaps too tight. I plan to grease/lub all parts that need it on the deck before I put it back on and probably not have the belt as tight as it was when I took it off. The tractor had the deck attached when I got it- can the belt shrink when it sits around? I am assuming the tension pulleys worked as they were the last time it was used.

Now I am also trying to figure out the Cub 54-A blade that came with it. I think I am missing a part. I got the 'brochure' for it off the Internet that worked ok for figuring out how to position it and I have the rear brackets hooked up fine to the hydraulics and rear anchor point but it looks as though the pair of mid-way vertical brackets anchor somehow to that square hole that runs horizontally behind the front axle. The brochure doesn't show enough detail about how or what I'm missing. By the time i figure it out and/or get the part the snow will be gone.

Thanks for the advise on the deck. I will give it a good grease job and oil change and try to run it with your recommendations. I will probably also keep my eyes open for a 42" deck. The Cub has not been rebuilt to my knowledge nor does it appear to have been. The dealer I got it from replaced the carb and dist cap/wires but that is all that looks newish.

Thanks for the help, Andy
