Clutch Problem

When I depress the clutch pedal on my 71 Ford 2000, I am disengaging the transmission (and can shift gears etc. without any problems). However, the PTO does not disengage. I've tried adjusting the linkage (up and down), but it has no impact.
Any thoughts as to why the PTO drive is not disengaging. I can't shift "on" the PTO without the tractor running. Frustrating problem! I would sure appreciate any ideas.

Thanks!

You have a problem with the 2nd (PTO) stage of your 2 stage clutch. Is the front clevis on the external clutch rod pinned in the rear hole? if not, do that first. Then adjust freeplay to 1" or less. If the PTO still does not disengage, you have an internal clutch problem that most likely will require splitting the tractor.

Not familiar with your tractor, but you have a live PTO. It's not supposed to stop when you push in the clutch. This enables you to stop movement of the tractor in heavy conditions such as baling, etc, and leaves the PTO running to prevent the machine from plugging. Also enables you to shift gears easier when the PTO is running. Some tractors have what is called a PTO clutch, which when pushed in part of the way disengages the transmission, rest of way disengages the PTO. Just shut it off with the PTO lever.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate your reply.
One more question, does this mean I have to crank the tractor with the PTO engaged? I cannot engage the PTO after the tractor is running without grinding the drive gears. Any thought?

Thanks again for the feedback.

If you can't engage the PTO with the engine running, you have a problem that can be answered on the Ford board. It should engage easily with the clutch depressed, particularly at idle.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate your respone.
One more question, does this mean the tractor must be started with the PTO engaged? I cannot engage the PTO after starting without filing off the gears. This is particularly true if the end load is heavy, such as with a bush hog. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the feedback.
