What about rewiring the generator for 12v. I have heard of this being done to "preserve" the look but take advantage of 12v. I have no 'perience with this as everything I run is 12v - to me 6v to much headache for a work rig.

If you already have 12v and it is working, keep it. If you already have 6v and it is working, keep it. 6v will start my Super MTA even in temps below zero. The key is to keep all connections CLEAN and TIGHT and use 0 GAUGE cable - also be sure that it is tuned properly. The 6v battery in my Super MTA will barely turn it over compression (I know something isn't right) but if it turns over twice it starts.

The 6v system would be the way to go if you plan on having a total restoration and would like to win awards at shows. For pure functionality, the 12v is easier to maintain - alternator does not need to be oiled, simpler wiring, cheaper battery, etc.

The choice is up to you.
Steven

You left out your tractor brand, model. I have a 1953 H.Ferguson TO30 that I restored 13 years ago. It has the original 6V system and starts reliably even at -20F. The key is proper maintence. A 6V system uses "O" gauge battery cables, the small 6ga cables used on 12V systems will not carry adequate ampherage. 6V componets are readily available at most starter/gen rebuild shops. Farm stores usually sell 6V tractor batteries cheaper that 12V batteries.

I have several 6 volt Farmalls that sit outside and they start reliably at below 0 deg temps. The H has power steering the the Super M has live hydraulics. If the tractor is properly maintained, has the correct oil for the temperature and you push the clutch in while cranking, it will start.

The only reason I would Use a 6 volt system would be to have a show tractor or if the 6 volt system was working. With the 12 volt system it is more simple, less wiring and components parts more available and more up to date.

I have 12 antiques and have them all changed to 12v, most sit alot but with 12v there always ready to GO!! Three of them are used year round I don"t have time to mess with a tractor that won't start!!(it's down the road) Just my two cents but think about thru before you go back to 6v. God Luck.
