Serial # Plate How do you reinstall factory rivets?

The MH44 I'm doing needs to be painted behind the plate. It's not a show tractor but want it to resemble appearance. Battery acid has got the best of it also. Any tips on restoring the plate itself?? Thanks. Fred

I have some spiraled rivets that are driven in. I don't know the size. I would be willing to send you a couple. All you would have to do is drill a hole, maybe to get the right size hole i would try them in a piece of scrap metal first. If interested contact me and I'll send them to you.

If the plate is on the block or other heavy casting, the rivets are probably solid, round head with a long helix, about one turn or so for the length of the rivet. A hole of correct diameter is drilled and the rivets are hammered in. I suspect a punch with a concave end would work without damaging the head. I don't remember what they are called, but a country hardware store I know of has several different sizes. I doubt if they sell very many. If the plate is on sheet metal, a hollow rivet is used. I found that a new center punch will do a factory looking job by rolling over the sides of the rivet, provided it's the right length. I did a hollow copper rivet and was surprised at how well it turned out. I once inquired about factory riveting and was told it takes special machinery to do the job. I think the biggest problem is finding the correct rivets.

I have "restored" two ID plates from my Olivers which were lithographed on an aluminum backing. First I carefully removed the rivets using a small, sharp chisel. If you work at it gently from all sides, the rivets will pop loose without damage. They can be reset using a dab of epoxy. Regarding restoring the plate, I used an extra fine tip Sharpie marker and a straight edge where necessary (clean it first very gently in water and detergent if you must, but don't loose the lettering outlines). With some time and a steady hand, you can put the plate back to pretty good condition. It will all fade to an even background and will actually look better in time. Good luck.

Those solid rivets are generally referred to as " drive screws " and can be turned out with a screw driver if you carefully cut a slot ( with a thin wheel in a die grinder or ? ) Use care in trying to lift them out with a chisel, they break off easily. Most fastener places carry them in various dia.

The Oliver rivets do not have the typical flutes of a drive screw. They have two pinched sides midway up the rivet shaft, preventing them from being turned out, thus I had to carefully chisel them out as mentioned in my first post.
