I am restoring an older MTD riding lawnmower frame with a Briggs engine. When i try to start the engine the throttle cable starts smoking once i apply juice to the starter. The entire are gets hot around the where the throttle cable mounts to the engine. There is 1 black wire that is screwed onto a small post just above the throttle cable... is this a ground wire? At first i thought i had a grounding problem due to the way the engine mounts to the frame. On this particular rider the engine mounts to a plate and the plate mounts to the frame. There are rubber washers in between the plate and frame so the engine itself is not grounded to the frame well. I tried to use some jumper cables to ground the engine to the frame but throttle are still gets hot and smokes when juice is applied to starter.
I know the engine is good it was working fine on the dead frame i pulled it from, unless this short has damaged something it should still be ok.
Also the engine does crank when juice is applied to starter. Any help or suggestions appreciated

Sounds like a lack of engine grounding to me. Where is your negative battery cable grounded? Clean this area and bolt, attach a wire (Heavy) from the engine to this same battery cable ground.
That should do it. Clean all paint from the grounding surfaces and clean them good.

The negative battery is gounded to the frame in an open area that would be between your legs if you were sitting on the rider. I will mount a battery cable from that negative grounding bolt to one of the engine bolts and try it as soon as the rain clears. I knew there was a simple solution to getting it grounded right. I was thinking of drilling holes somewhere and putting more bolts etc.. lol, amazing how simple things can be when u have the right solution. I'll let you know if it solves the problem. Thanks for the great tip.
