Here's a recently discovered restoration tip for the hard to find Oliver Clover White paint used on rims and grills of many models. Rustoleum now produces custom colored paints. I compared the Rustoleum "Grasshopper" color to the paint chip at NAPA (Martin Senour) for Oliver White and it was nearly an exact match. You can brighten it just a bit if desired with the addition of a little white paint. At $7/quart for Rustoleum verses $40+ for auto paint the choice is easy unless you are putting it in a museum or have nothing to do with your money. I painted it on my rims last night and they look really good.

I guess I'm a bit like you, I prefer to save some money on paint if at all possible and go with machinery enamels such as Rustoleum, etc. for my tractor work. Let's not kid ourselves though, over time they do fade and oxidize quite a bit. BUT, if you keep them out of the sun for the most part, they'll last years and years and look pretty good.

About 40 years ago, I used Rustoleum red primer on some trailer fenders. The trailer hasn't been used since '72 and is not covered, although it is in shade from a building. About 95% of the primer is still tight except where it has been scratched or hit. They used fish oil then. Don't know what is used now, but it's the best paint ever.

Another durable paint is that used for concrete floors, but as mentioned above it does't have the UV resistance that auto paint comes with.
