Can anyone give me some tips on thread restoration on a Case tractor

I am restoring a 1936 Model C Case and am currently working on two problems.

First, the thread on the belt pulley is damaged. It is slightly flattend all over and at the end of shaft is burred so I can not get a nut on. I think the thread is 7/8 UNF. I intended to carefully file a taper on the end of the shaft and then use a die nut to clean out the thread. However a friend has told me that there is a thread restoration tool that can do a better job. The tractor is on our farm 30 miles from the nearest town and it costs an arm and leg to get a mechanic out to do a job like this. Anyone have any tips on how I should do the job?

Second, a grease fitting with a water pipe thread is broken off in the rear axle. I have tried using an easy out (no 5). I put a lot of tension on it but could not shift it and am afraid of breaking the easy out. I also tried a cold chisle and punch to try to loosten it, again without sucess. I thought of using the easy out with an air impact wrench set at low touque. Again, does anyone have any tips on how I should do the job?

Thanks

Bob

I too would recomend the thread file described. I just got a rethreading kit from sears. it was about $45. It is not the same as a tap and die set. It works well. I had a boogered up thread on the end of a shaft and the file worked it out to accept the nut. The toughest part is figuring out what the pitch was. The rest is just a slow and careful operation. You don't want to rush. File a little then try it and repeat.

A good industrial supply house will have a thread file for you. It is a square file, about 10 inches long, and has a different thread pitch on each surface. You should be able to get it good enough to start the die nut. The same thing happened to me, and I managed to to it with a triangular file.

You may have to drill and retap the grease zerk. 1/8-27 NPT thread calls for a letter R drill, but 11/32 will work just fine. If depth of hole is such you can't get a pipe tap deep enough, you can take an old tap and grind off the end until you have the right tapped depth for your zerk
