My Crankshaft Pulley has a deep groove worn in it where the old oil seal was. Tried some fine emery cloth, but it is too deep to polish it out. What is the best fix for this type of problem?

Speedi-Sleeve, or reposition the seal onto a virgin part of the shaft.

Speedi-Sleeve. Check out the link. These repair sleeves are available from most industrial power transmission equipment dealers.

Does each size sleeve require a matching installation tool or is the tool useable for a range of sizes? What is the approximate cost of a sleeve & tool for a 1-3/4" shaft?

Hi Slowpoke,

The installation tool that comes with the sleeve is not worth much. It is a real nickle and dime thing and is unique to each size sleeve. It has one blind end and is quite short. It's worthless for installing the sleeve any significant distance from the end of the shaft. Anything hollow that will go over the sleeve OD and still contact the removable flange on the sleeve will work. I am about to install a sleeve on my AC-B belt pulley shaft. In this case the area that the seal rides on is about 3" in from the end of the shaft. I am going to use a short piece of PVC pipe to install the sleeve. The sleeve I have is for a 1-3/8" diameter shaft. It was fairly pricey at about $25.

Thanks, Rod. I guess it's less costly than getting a replacement shaft, new or used. Probably less trouble, too.
