I need to pull the crankshaft pulley on my Allis D-14, which seems pretty straightforward, but when I reinstall it on the crankshaft do I risk damaging the bearings and / or the front and rear seals by driving the pulley back on the shaft. It is attached by a set screw and woodruff key. Should I heat the pulley in the oven in order to make it mount easier?

Use a bolt, washer and nut to reinstall the pulley. Thread the nut up on the bolt, place washer over bolt and tighten bolt into the threads in the end of your crank. Hold the bolt head with one wrench and tighten the nut toward the pulley with another wrench. Works well.

Jerry,

The pulley on this crank is pressed on, although there is a small hole in the end of the crank, it is shallow and has no threads. I like your idea though, I am a little reluctant to start wailing away on the pulley with some kind of large socket and a hammer to drive the pulley onto the shaft. I suppose that I could drill the existing hole a little larger and quite a bit deeper, then tap it, then I could use the method you suggest. Any other suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Thanks

With the lack of threads in the end of the crank, you can leave the oil pan off, and hold the crank shaft forward with a pry bar and then using a hammer and block of wood drive the pulley home. This will prevent damaging the thrust surface of the thrust main.
