Cracked block in TO 20

I have a Ferguson TO-20 with the continental engine with a blown head gasket. When I was cleaning the block to replace the gasket I noticed a small crack between each of the cylinder sleeves in the block. There was water in the oil when I drained it. Is this a death sentence for this old tractor?

Thanks for any help or suggestions, W.S.

That is very common on that engine block, but there is good news, you can actually bolt it back together. A good machine shop can do it. What they do is to drill a hole on both sides of the block and run a bolt through one side to the other between the the cylinder walls. It does work. I believe the Allis Chalmers blocks have the same problem. The last one that a machine shop did for me was less $20, but that was about 5 years ago.

These cracks on the block deck between the cylinders are so common in Allis Chalmers WC engines, that everyone usually ignores them. The cylinder sleeve in these engines is slightly raised, maybe .001 to .003 inch. A new head gasket with some good aviation gasket sealer will seal the cylinder from any entering coolant. The Ferguson/Continental Z series engines are made in a similar manner. Try a new head gasket before going to the trouble of pulling the engine.
