Cleaing block surface

I just took my head off to be redone and am wondering what you guys use to clean off the top of the block before reassembly.

The best way I've found to clean blocks and heads is with a scoth-brite pad by 3m, part #051131-07451, holder part # 3m 924. It will make it as shinny as you can get with out crome. It will not cut your metal,. If you have a diesel engine with pencil injectors be sure and remove them first. Hope this helps. cost about $2.50 per part!

You asked what I use, not if it is correct. Assuming the engine is NOT disassembled, I use a combination of a rigid scraper, pocket knife, and a small wire brush, being careful not to damage the surface, and try to avoid getting anything into the cylinders. Plus frequent use of a shop vac. If you have an empty block, scrape and scrub away, just don't scratch the surface.
