I had been mowing for about 2hrs when my 9N started backfiring and overheating. I had just replaced the water pump, hoses, and added new coolant. I had also replaced the plugs and plug wires. I turned the tractor off to check it out and have not been able to get it started again. The engine does turn over but will not start. Any suggestions appreciated.

Frank, first I would check for spark. Condensor failure sounds like your problem. The overheating could occur if you were working the tractor hard and had some chaff partially blocking the radiator. The fan would keep the tractor from overheating, but as soon as the fan stopped, so did the cooling. Check your radiator fins for debris and blow them out.

If you have spark, then I would check for fuel flow. Turn off the fuel at the tank, the valve should be under the tank at the sediment bowl. Remove and clean the bowl and the screen. Replace the screen and the bowl. Turn on the valve and make sure you have steady flow to the bowl. Turn off the valve again. Take the fuel line off at the carb and turn the fuel valve on. You should have a steady full flow. Next, remove the elbow on the carb where the fuel line attached. The elbow has a screen on the end. Blow any debris out of the screen. Put things back together and see if it will start. If not, the carb will need to be taken apart and cleaned.

These cover the basics. If they don't help, post back.

Frank --

I don't have any special insight into the foibles and weaknesses of Ford tractors, but standard rules for troubleshooting internal combustion engines would apply.

Is the engine getting fuel, air, and fire? In the right proportions and at the right time?

It's pretty unusual for an engine that has been running to suddenly run out of compression to the point that it won't run any more, but engine parts can give up and break in just a few seconds.

Still, I'd suggest that you look at ignition and carburetion first, and if the problem's not in either of those systems a compression check is probably in order.

(And my intuitive SWAG is that your tractor has developed a timing problem, either in the ignition or valves.)

Happy troubleshooting.

John
