I have been using an electrolytic parts cleaner with a solution of Washing Soda as the electrolyte. Can't find Washing Soda lately...what would be a good substitute? Thanks.

Found washing soda, Arm and Hammer brand, in the laundry detergent isle at Meijer and Kroger.

Drano doen't need electricity to strip paint, it's lye. Be careful, it will eat non-ferrous items (like copper, brass, nickle plating...). It will wokr as an electrolyte.

The link above is very helpful. I do small parts this way. follow the instructions EXACTLY and remember to keep it ventilated due to the gasses.

I used crystal "Drano" when I had mine set up.

Get everything set up and turned on. Then add the Drano until the reading on the ammeter is 10 amps. Leave it overnight and the next day you have a rust-free item.

Sodium Hydroxyde (NaOH) was recommended on this forum a while ago and I've used it with good results. It seems to remove paint better than washing soda. Sodium Hydroxyde is hard on your skin so use gloves and eye protection!
