Any body out there that can help me out? I have a Deere 425 garden tractor been working fine until last week, my problem is the tractor runs fine when first started for 6 minutes (i timed it) then it cuts out completely, no sputter nothing, just cuts right out. After it cuts out it will start right up and run for about 3 seconds then cuts out again, and if I leave it sit for about 1/2 hour it will run again for about 6 minutes again and then cut out I'm sure this is not fuel related and am most positive it is electrical. Does anybody out there know what might be going on don't want to start replaceing elec. components one at a time knowing my luck it will be the last component that I replace that will cure the problem. Thanks in advance

I had the same problem last year and I took off the engine cover and cleaned all the old grass out from the cooling fin's and it seemed to fix it so it was an overheating problem causing the electical to cut out Why? I am not sure.

Hi Joe,
I am not familiar with a JD 425 but it sounds to me like one of the electrical componets is failing due to heat generated by resistance to the flow of electricity. One of them is probably bad, points condensor, coil or electronic ignition module, possibly spark plug but not likely.

I agree - sysmptoms sound like an electrical problem. (If it were fuel it would sorta sputter down and stall over several seconds rather than quitting suddenly.) Verify by running the tractor until it cuts out and won't restart. Then immediately remove the spark plug, lay it on the block, reconnect the plug wire and crank the engine to see if there's a spark at the plug. If no spark, it's gotta be an ignition problem.

If the problem is ignition the most likely cause is the ignition coil (battery or magneto, whichever your tractor has). The coil is failing after it heats up in operation.

Hope this helps...

You might want to check if your fuel cap vent is clear and not blocked.

I would suggest you check your fuel flow. It sounds like your engine is using up the fuel in the carburetor faster than it can be replenished. Sometimes, it takes just a few seconds, sometimes it could be many minutes. When the engine stops, the fuel is replenished in the carburetor, then it starves again in six minutes.
