I'm new to old tractors and have recently purchased a 601 mod.641 ford workmaster. It has been slow to start for a week since I bought it, but now it starts and then within 10 to 15 seconds it will die suddenly. I cleaned the resevoir bowl and drained the carb, figuring there was dirt buildup, which there had been. But I am still having the same problem. It ran alright for the first week or so when I bought it. Also in starting the tractor, but not being able to let it run long enough to do the battery any good, I need an answer to if I can jump it off of a car battery and how, since the ford has a 6 volt positive ground system. thanks

It sounds like your problem is the same as I had. Mine was a 48 Allis B. Mine would run but only if choked. First I removed the carb, cleaned out all trash in it, made sure all orifaces and jets were clean, reassembled and installed. Next, I drained out all old gas. Put in new, then drained again, several times, each time filtering it through a coffee filter. After about 4 or 5 times I had most of trash out of tank. Then, I removed sediment bulb, cleaned it, and made a filter for it using a 3inch by 4 inch piece of screen wire rolled up like a cigarette. Installed this in sediment bulb fitting, reinstalled sediment bulb, reconnected fuel line and it runs like new. As for battery, put it on charger and give it a full charge. Should give you many starts if you still have other problems. Hope this helps. Bob D. (La)
