8N brake problem

I have an 8N that has a problem that is driving me and the mechanic nuts. On occasion, and especially after the tractor has sat overnight the right rear brake will lock up. The tractor will move fine in reverse, but when you start to go forward is when this lock up occurs. Sometime the brake will stick a hair and on other occasions it will lock up so bad that the tractor will spin in a circle.

The only thing that seems to be consistent is that the lock up occurs, after the tractor has set up a while and has not locked up in reverse, yet. The mechanic has looked at it and says the only thing that he can see so far it that there are some shims in the brake system. He is not quite certain why they are there. I offered to spend the money to buy a new brake drum and he said that would not fix the problem. Now I am really confused and I think he is to. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Had the exact same problem, a real head scratcher because everything looked perfect. I replaced the springs (you do have the third spring on the right hand side don't you?) and lubed all of the contact/pivot points and the problem went away. So something was dragging just enough to keep it from releasing. Based on the comments I found in the archives this seems to be a pretty common problem but most of the time it's on the left side. Good Luck!

Check for weak or broken springs and replace them.

I had almost the same thing happen to my 8n....found it was a combination of to much shims and brake drum was worn beyond specs. Also had to radius grind shoes to match drums....
