Oil return from oil bath

I just rebuilt my 2n tractor and tried to start it today. The engine was pretty tight and I pulled it behind another tractor. The problem is that oil is blowing out from the intake pipe which goes down into the oil bath for the air intake to the carb. The engine is turning over but has not started. Any ideas why the oil is blowing out. Thanks

You might have your engine 180 degrees out of time- blowing out the intake, sucking in the exhaust pipe? Been there, done that, courtesy of a motor sgt at Ft. Bragg, NC in '65, who helped put a Corvair together. He felt so bad, he let me use the motor pool, instead of the parking lot, for an overnight redo of the cam and crankshaft. Pulled an overnighter, but I had it running by daybreak! AIRBORNE!

If I'm interpreting what you say correctly (and I'm not sure that I am) it may be blowing back into the inlet manifold which would suggest to me that a valve is open when it shouldn't be, which suggests checking valve timing carefully. Wouldn't expect oil to appear unless is stirring up oil in air cleaner itself.

Another cause of engine spitting out oil from openings that communicate to the crankcase is broken piston rings which might be possible if it was tight to turn.
