First off, I know very little about tractors, but have "inherited" a Ford 8N. Was thinking about selling it, but may reconsider as it is a nice little tractor (runs great, just not real pretty)for my 2.5 acres.

Had some people looking at it and the guy pointed out that there were some bubbles in the radiator fluid and that he felt moisture in the exhaust which indicated a cracked head gasket to him. I got the feeling that he knows nothing about this tractor and was looking for an excuse to talk me down in price (which was set by others who know the tractor). I talked to a few other people who state that he was full of it. Any other opinions?

2nd Question: Any recommendations on manuals for this tractor? Should I get the shop or the owner's manual or both???

Thanks for all replies.

kewpalace, There is one other possibility for bubbles,

a leaking water pump seal. When the pump is

running , being that it is a centrifugal pump,it

creates a vacuum at the seal . If the seal is weak

it can suck air in and not leak water out, normaly

we see this in large tractors , road trucks ,and

industrial engines .

Take pump belt off to check , if bubbles are there

without belt it is not the pump .

Hi Kewpalace,

If you have a stream of bubbles in your radiator when the engine is running, you have a head gasket problem allowing combustion pressures to leak into the coolant system. Pure and simple. It doesn't matter if it's a Ford tractor or an Oldsmobile car, the prognosis is the same. Basic stuff.

Thanks for the reply. There was no "stream" of bubbles; just "intermittent" bubbles. The tractor has been sitting for about 6-8 months, too (whether that makes any difference or not!). I'll have to check it again though, just to make sure! Thanks again; your imput is appreciated!

He's full of something, when gasoline is burnt one of the by products is water as seen as steam in the winter.
