I would like to put a Delco alternator on my IH 504 . I have read several of the posting dealing with this type of installation . The question I have is can the existing wires ( one white and one green ) from the generator be used in place of running new wires to the ingnition switch and battery. Also there is a condensor wired to the back of the generator does this need to be retained . The alternator has four terminals on the back one maked battery , on R and one F and one marked ground .

Sorry I forgot to ad the alternator was purchased from Auto Zone and is for a 70's / 80's GM truck . The Auto zone part # is 7122

Tom – You can reuse the existing generator wire harness so long as the insulation is in good shape. If one wire is heavier than the other connect it to the alternator BAT terminal – it’s the one that will carry the most current. Note!! If your new alternator has aux terminals marked R and F, it’s an externally-regulated unit – will require a matching external regulator in order for it to work. To simplify your wiring I recommend swapping it for a Delco 10SI internally-regulated alternator. BTW that condenser on the old generator is for RF noise suppression. If your tractor has an AM radio you might want to connect it to your new alternator to reduce static on the radio (connect the condenser to the BAT terminal). However the alternator will work fine without the condenser.
