i have a 1951 to 20 ferg. i put a gm alt. on it the type with 1 post and a 2 prong plugin, i tied the larger red wire on the plugin to the post on the alt, then ran the wire to the battery, the small brown wire on the plugin to the charge light, and i put a ballast reister in the wire from the swich to the points, but the problem is it keeps burnning out the voltage regulators, what have i done wrong?

Bill your connections are wrong, the plugin [pigtail] #2 is connected to the hot wire on the alt and #1 goes to either the ignition switch or the charge lite, this wire is used only to activate the alternator. the pigtail wires that my local parts store sells have for #2 red,#1 white. Check out the article section to the left there are several upgrades described but the hookups are the same. Question did you put the battery in with the ground negative as required by the alt, if you use a pos ground the alt will be fried.
