Turn the crank or not?

I am in the process of doing some motor work on a MF285 with a Perkins 318 diesel. I have, thus far performed the overhaul without breaking apart the tractor and I am hoping to keep it that way. My dilemma is that the crank looks to be in good condition except for 1 spot that has some grooves in it. Can I get by with just putting new rod bearings in? Or, will I need to pull the crank and get it turned?
Thanks Chris

If the scratch is above the surface - it must be removed - if its below the surface forget it and just change the bearings. If its just a scratch use som time with a fine peace of sandpaper to ensure that nothing is above the surface. A good indicator is to use the old bearing halves from one of the other bearings an assemble the bearing - turn the crankshaft a few times an disassemble the bearing again. If there are no signs of the scratch in the halves then you are ready to replace the all connectionrod bearings.
Regarding the main bearings of the crankshaft just change the ones under the crankshaft forget the upper ones.
From my experience the only reason for disassemble the engine totally is if you have to change the oilseals (which on the 3.152 is allmost hopelessly).

I'd say, if you can catch your finger nail on the groove, it's begging to be ground.

With the kind of money you've already spent, I'd go ahead and pull the crank, have it turned or polished as needed. A good machine shop will be able to do either. One thing that is hard to see is the wear on the thrust bearing. Go ahead and do it all the way. You won't be sorry. If you don't, you just might end up regretting it, a year or so down the road.

I certainly agree. My neighbor realized the final cost of a overhaul! He didn't replace the thrust bearings. Well, now he has new block and crank too!
