Hello,
My name is James I am from a small town in MI. I have been away in the big city of Phoenix going to school for the past year.I just returned home to the farm and have taken a intrest in to old gas tractors. We have 2 on our farm that need to be restored. We have a Farmall A (We believe it is a 1943 model) and a 1953 Allis Chalmers WD.I am more focused on the A I grew up driving and loving that tractor. What all is entailed in a restoration?I know just like a car it can be no end on how much money you put into them, but on your typical resto how much does it usually run??I have been into fast Mustangs and Camaros for years now and they are fun,but I want something to just play with, look good and not have to worry how fast it is.I guess I would like to find out the year of our rig first and foremost. How can I do that.Where can I find the numbers I need to have? I tried to start the old girl tonight. It was the first time it had been touched in about 5-7 years.I am going to spend some time on her tomorrow and try to get her going and cleaned up a bit.My dad told me tonight that he remembers driving it home from the IHC Dealer in the early 60's when his dad had it painted for the first time. And since then there has been no cosmetics done.It is still a 6 volt system also.I am pretty green when it comes to tractors so please forgive me if I sound dumb. Thanks in advance for your time and info.I am eager to learn and eager to get her going.
Thanks
James

on the side bar look for "reserch and info" click on "serial numbers" it will take you to the index. click on Farmall, then A AV B BN, it will tell you the numbers and where to find them. your welcome.
Hope you have fun with your tractor. A nice restoration can be whatever you want, from a simple tuneup and repaint to a full teardown ans replace every bolt. My goal is just to get them to run again. It's my opinion that they don't need to be like new inside cuz nobody's going to take them to the field and work hard all day anyhow. On the other hand it hurts me to see one at a show that smokes or don't run right.
